About LearntoLearn

In the early 1970's, a psychology professor named Philippe Falkenberg was counseling undergraduate students who were struggling with their schoolwork. He noticed a trend among the students: They did not know how to learn. Dubbed "A to D" students, these students had excelled in high school and then were overwhelmed with the college workload. Some students struggled with time management, others with slow reading or poor organization. In most cases, it simply boiled down to students not knowing how to learn or apply a particular study skill.

Being a great problem solver, Dr. Falkenberg pulled together his research in learning and compiled it into the LearntoLearn Course, an intensive course for developing proper study habits. Over a period of 25 years, Dr. Falkenberg taught the LearntoLearn Course privately to nearly 3,000 students. During this long period the course has been offered in many settings including as a Wake Forest University credit course, being adopted as the W.F.U. tutoring center study skills program and offered to teachers for development training.

Dr. Falkenberg's study skills textbook, 15 Days to Study Power (Greencrest Press, 1994), was written especially for student's taking the LearntoLearn course.  In 1986, the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction adopted the textbook for use in all state high schools.

The popular LearntoLearn Summer Course has been taught on the Wake Forest University campus annually since 1972 to high school and college students in the North Carolina triad area. In recent years a middle school course has been added to the traditional high school and college offerings. Over the years, the course has also been taught in numerous cities around North Carolina.

Nearly four decades later, there are still many students who are not receiving comprehensive study skills training.  Study Skills Institute was formed for the exclusive purpose or providing courses and curriculum based on the LearntoLearn principles for students, parents, educators and institutions of learning.  In this effort we have discovered that the problem is not just the need for proven study skills curriculum, but also the ability to implement it in an affordable and effective way.  To accomplish this we have developed the online Study Skills Institute which provides courses, curriculum and resources that can be adapted for any learning environment.
